(Photo provided by family of Elijah McClain)The final trial over the 2019 death of Elijah McClain after he was stopped by police in Aurora is expected to delve into largely uncharted legal territory, with paramedics, not officers, being prosecuted this time.Starting Monday, jurors will be chosen to decide if the paramedics committed a crime when they gave the 23-year-old Black man an overdose of the powerful sedative ketamine after he was forcibly restrained by police.McClain went into cardiac arrest on his way to the hospital and was pronounced dead three days later. Three officers already have gone to trial and two were acquitted. The case will be the first of several recent criminal charges against medical first responders to reach trial and could “set the bar” for prosecutors in future cases, said Douglas Wolfberg, a former emergency medicine instructor and founding partner of a Pennsylvania law firm representing emergency me...Opinion: A one-sided special session struck down Republican ideas for more of the same from Democrats

On Nov. 7, Colorado voters overwhelmingly rejected Gov. Jared Polis and the Colorado Democrats’ answer to the overwhelmingly oppressive effects of rising taxation on their property.A week later, after public calls from Republicans and others, Polis convened a special session. In four long days, the Democrats unanimously shoved through policies that showed a clear disdain for the will of the people of Colorado. Our hope was an honest collaboration with the citizens and the other side of the aisle to bring real relief to those suffering from this overreach into the pockets of working families in this state.During the 2023 regular legislative session, Republicans presented solutions to the imminent skyrocketing jump in property taxes as a result of the 2020 repeal of the Gallagher Amendment which kept property taxes suppressed. Governor Polis and legislator Democrats had no interest in having an honest debate and instead pushed through their agenda to steal some of your Taxpayer’...Suspect connected to Centennial shooting death arrested in Wyoming

Left to Die Breathes Life into Death: Back in March, we reviewed a show at the Belasco featuring a band called Death to All. That band includes three former members of Floridian death metal pioneers Death in its ranks — drummer Gene Hoglan, bassist Steve DiGiorgio and guitarist Bobby Koelble. Death mainman Chuck Schuldiner died in 2001 of brain cancer at the way-too-young age of 34, and Death to All helps to keep his music alive by playing it in front of a lot of people, very well.As it happens though, they’re not the only Death tribute featuring former members. This Saturday at the Echo, Left to Die played an immense set that included every track from 1988’s bonafide classic Leprosy album, as well a few from the also immense Scream Bloody Gore debut. The band features Death men Rick Rozz (guitar) and Terry Butler (bass, now of Obituary), both of whom are credited on Leprosy, although according to Wiki, Butler didn’t actually play on the album. No matter, the...Most school shootings in U.S. aren’t mass killings, study finds, and they’re often driven by community violence

By Amanda Musa | CNNMany Americans think of school shootings as mass casualty events involving an adolescent with an assault-style weapon. But a new study says that most recent school shootings orchestrated by teenagers do not fit that image — and they are often related to community violence. The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, analyzed 253 school shootings carried out by 262 adolescents in the US between 1990 and 2016.It found that these adolescents were responsible for only a handful of mass casualty shootings, defined as those involving four or more gunshot fatalities. About half of the shootings analyzed — 119 — involved at least one death. Among the events, seven killed four or more people.A majority of the shootings analyzed also involved handguns rather than assault rifles or shotguns, and they were often the result of “interpersonal disputes,” according to the researchers from University of South Carolina and University of Florida.“When you look at gun...Latest news
