‘Getting older’: Campaign provides representation of adults with Down syndrome

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:13:06 GMT

For Sean Hughes, it’s important to talk about people with Down syndrome getting older and how individuals like him can live fulfilling and independent lives.“Just enjoy life,” said Hughes of Kitchener, Ont., who will be celebrating his 50th birthday this year.Over the last 40 years, the life expectancy for an individual with Down syndrome has increased. The Canadian Down Syndrome Society says that in 1983 the life expectancy was about 25 years. Today, it’s more than 60 years. However, there is little media representation for older adults living with Down syndrome and that’s prompted a campaign that aims to break the stereotype that people with the genetic condition don’t live into their senior years. The campaign from the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, called “Here I Am,” is a photo essay that shows 13 people who have Down syndrome between the ages of 44 and 75. 'Disgusting': Racist, antisemitic flyers found in Connecticut neighborhood

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:13:06 GMT

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Residents of two Connecticut areas made a troubling discovery this week: white supremacist and antisemitic flyers outside their New Haven and Hamden homes."I found this in front of my house — right in the driveway, right behind one of our cars," said Richard Brown, of Hamden. "This is a white supremacist message. It's clear when you open it up and take a look at it." Illinois café rescued from closure after harassment over drag show Brown found the flyer at his house early Thursday morning. These flyers were left on several other streets in town and the East Rock neighborhood in New Haven."There's somebody with some intent and some resources that are trying to stir up trouble. And we need to say that's not who we are and not what we stand for," New Haven resident Paul Wessel said. The flyers reference Yale MBA student, Robert Lucas, who recently proposed renaming Whitney Avenue in New Haven. The street is named after Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotto...

HONOLULU (KHON2) — At least 12 passengers are planning to file a lawsuit against Hawaiian Airlines over a flight that hit severe turbulence and injured dozens of people. The attorney is raising questions on whether the pilot and co-pilot took the necessary precautions to avoid the injuries. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said 20 people were taken to the hospital. An attorney who represents 12 injured passengers said the captain should have ordered all passengers and crew members to sit down and buckle up, knowing they were about to hit severe turbulence."That simply was not done on this flight — and that is what should’ve been done on this flight. And, if that had been done, then nobody would have been injured," said attorney Nomaan ...

For veteran Marc-Andre Fleury, no matter what, Las Vegas will feel like home

LAS VEGAS — Marc-Andre Fleury admittedly didn’t know much about Las Vegas before the Golden Knights selected him in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. He remembered traveling to Sin City once prior, with his experience more or less defined by what he saw on The Strip. As time progressed, though, Fleury fell in love with Las Vegas, and maybe more importantly, Las Vegas fell in love with him. He was the face of the Golden Knights during their first season in the NHL as they shocked the world en route to reaching the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. In total, Fleury played 192 games for the Golden Knights before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in a move that devastated the fan base. Nowadays, the 38-year-old Fleury is with the Wild, and he was set to be between the pipes on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.“Only my second time so it’s still a little weird,” said Fleury, who started a game last season in his former home arena. “I have great memori...
